Working Dog Performance Evaluation and Scale - 2012-01-22

I have developed a performance scale for working cattle dogs. I have begun to send a written performance evaluation of dog’s that I am training, home with their owners at the conclusion of training. It is a written evaluation/explanation of their dog’s current level of ability. It includes an actual “grade” level on a 1-12 performance scale, with “1” being the lowest and “12” being the highest. I currently use this scale to help me evaluate dogs coming to me for training. It helps me determine where they are in their current abilities and if they are ready to be and/or capable of being trained. I also reevaluate a dog midway through training and at the conclusion. It helps me know that what I am doing is working or not. It allows me to make changes and customize each dog’s training. I feel our performance scale will help someone who wants to know their own dog’s ability level, wants to place a working dog on the market, or is looking to purchase one. We are currently doing these evaluations free of charge for anyone. Our written performance evaluations are good for six months. I feel that a buyer or seller could use our scale to see where a particular dog is at in training and possible potential. The seller can show a prospective buyer the evaluation to assist them in knowing if the dog in question is right for them and their program. We prefer to do the evaluations at our location, but you tube video links of your dog working sent to our email is also an option (please contact us about video requirements before emailing). I do not have a problem with anyone using the performance scale to evaluate their own dog(s), but a written evaluation can only be obtained from SBLS. We are still looking in the future to possibly visiting with other trainers who may want to come on board and use our performance scale and evaluation. This would allow more people to obtain an evaluation and have their dog graded professionally. We also think this could be a great tool to help someone who wants to get their first working dog. We continually reevaluate our performance scale, and make adjustments as needed to meet the needs of our customers and the working dog! I now have developed individual scales for three different classifications of the working dog. Those three being the herding dogs, drive dogs (such as heelers), and the baying dogs. You can see a copy of all three scales on our website at smokinbaylivestock.com. Again, these scales are reevaluated monthly as we get feedback, and the needs and value of the working dog changes. If you have questions or input regarding the evaluation and/or scale, please send them to smokinbaylivestockservices@yahoo.com or call us at (580)263-0248. We would like to hear from you. Thanks from SBLS!
